The Experts Agree, Wings Over New Haven Rocks

Recently, cookbook author, home chef, food blogger, and entertaining expert Cindy Anschutz stopped by Wings Over New Haven to try out some of our delicious food.

She tried the slow cooked St. Louis style pork ribs, Cajun-style waffle fries with cheese, Cajun blackened chicken, a grilled chicken wrap, citrus chipotle wings, garlic parmesan boneless chicken tenders, and wimpy chicken wings.

As expected, she loved everything!

With the Cajun blackened chicken, Anschutz noted how the Cajun was not overpowering and that the blackened spices were a nice blend. She also made note of how the food wasn’t too salty, and how the chicken was melting in her mouth.

When eating the wrap, Anschutz mentioned how much chicken was in it. (We really do stuff our wraps!)

While we have some hot buffalo wings, Anschutz went with the “wimpy” ones, and noted how the flavor was really nice.

Now that you’ve heard it from an expert, come on down and try out some of these amazing meals for yourself!

Give us a call at 203-782-9464 or order online. Don’t feel like leaving the house or office? Let us deliver it for you!

Pairing Wings with Wine for the Holidays

The holidays are almost here and it’s time to start thinking about your food and beverage menus.

While you may not necessarily think about pairing wings with wine, there are several wines that work well with chicken wings.

If you have barbecue wings, you can pair them with a Non-Vintage Champagne. The wine is a reasonably good match with the barbecue wings, with the sweetness of the sauce unaffected by the dryness of the wine. Those seeking a perfect match for the barbecue wings may want to try a semi-dry sparkler.

This wine is also a successful combination with spicy wings, because each component will hold its own against the other, and the wine will perform a refreshing, palate-deglazing function against the hot, acidic sauce.

If you’re looking to serve white wine, your best bet is to go with an off-dry Riesling. This wine will keep its flavor best with both barbecue and spicy wings.

With barbecue wings, a Pinot Noir will do a fairly good balancing act with the barbecue wings, allowing each to showcase its strengths. A pinot noir is less ideal for hot wings.

A Zinfandel is also a good match for the barbecue wing because it has enough sweet fruit to balance the sweet barbecue sauce. It was also a good match with the spicy wing, holding up nicely in the face of the heat and acidity of the sauce.

Have Some Leftover Wings? Try These Recipes!

You have some leftover wings in your refrigerator, and you certainly don’t want them to go to waste!

But maybe you don’t feel like eating them as traditional wings again. Here are some recipes that will transform those leftover wings into other delicious meals!

1/2 Cup carrots
1 Cup celery
1/4 Cup onion (optional)
1 Clove garlic (optional)
1/3 Cup hot sauce (more or less depending on preference)
Tortilla strips

The vegetables and blue cheese will be used carefully. Try it and see what you think if it needs more or less is up to you and what you prefer. To cook the vegetables, let them simmer until they get cooked to your preference. To serve, top with a swirl of blue cheese dressing and colored tortilla strips for color.

Buffalo Chicken Pizza
Chicken, cubed
2 Tablespoons butter, melted
1 (2 ounce) Bottle hot sauce
1 (8 ounce) Bottle blue cheese salad dressing
1 (16 inch) Prepared pizza crust
1 (8 ounce) Package shredded mozzarella cheese

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. In a medium bowl, combine the chicken, melted butter, and hot sauce. Mix well. Spread the whole bottle of salad dressing over the crust, then top with the chicken mixture and sprinkle with shredded cheese. Bake it in the preheated oven until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly. This should take about 5 to 10 minutes. Let it set for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

Chicken Enchiladas
1 Tablespoon butter
1/2 Cup chopped green onions
1/2 Teaspoon garlic powder
1 (4 ounce) Can diced green chiles
1 (10.75 ounce) Can condensed cream of mushroom soup

1 1/2 Cups chicken, cubed
1 Cup shredded cheddar cheese, divided
6 (12 inch) Flour tortillas
1/4 Cup milk

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and lightly grease a large baking dish. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and saute the green onion until tender (about 3 to 4 minutes). Add the garlic powder, then stir in the green chiles, cream of mushroom soup, and sour cream. Mix it well. Reserve 3/4 of this sauce and set aside. To the remaining 1/4 of the sauce in the saucepan, add the chicken and 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Stir it all together. Fill each flour tortilla with the chicken mixture and roll it up. Place it seam side down in the prepared baking dish. In a small bowl, combine the reserved 3/4 of the sauce with the milk. Spoon this mixture over the rolled tortillas and top with the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Bake the enchiladas in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly.

History of the Connecticut Wings Over Locations

Did you know that there are five Wings Over locations right here in Connecticut?

Wings Over Storrs was the first location, opening approximately nine years ago. After that, the West HartfordNewington and Bristol locations were opened.
Wings Over New Haven is the newest location, opening in April 2013.

Wings Over was started in 1999 by two guys who didn’t like the direction that restaurant food was headed.

Most places that served the food they loved were just reheating food that was cooked in a factory somewhere.

They decided to change that.

Since building and finishing a dining room was extremely cost prohibitive, they decided to deliver their fresh, hand cooked wings and boneless wings to people and let them eat it at their own home.

Things began to grow pretty quickly with many success and some failures.
Even though the company goal was to be the best and not necessarily the biggest wing delivery place in the country, there are almost 30 stores today and growing.

Hope to see you soon!

If you're hungry now, give us a call at 203-782-9464 (WING) or order online.

Wings the Perfect Takeout for College Students

When you’re in college, there are a lot of things that will keep you from cooking at home – or in your dorm.
Late night study sessions, partying, and just not feeling like cooking are just a few reasons that takeout is very popular among college students.
Pair that with easy takeout ordering options, small cooking spaces, small food budgets, and little time for food preparation and it’s no wonder college students turn to takeout for meals.
Wings, fries, and salad are in the top five foods college students order most, according to GrubHub.
Luckily for the college students in the New Haven area, Wings Over New Haven has easy ordering options – including online – and has wings, fries, and salads – along with so much more.
Oh, and we also offer free delivery. We’re also open late (11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday), so you can get something no matter what time of day it is!
So whether you’re studying, partying, or just don’t feel like cooking – we’ve got you covered. You can get all the delicious food you want without having to do any of the work!

Wings Over New Haven a Challenge Location Sponsor for the New Haven Urban Scavenger Race

Are you ready to race?

We are!

This year, Wings Over New Haven is a challenge location sponsor for the 2014 New Haven Urban Scavenger Race on Sept. 20.

Competitors will need to visit Wings Over New Haven and consume a special chicken wing that will be provided. After this is done, they will cross it off their list and move on to the next clue location. Competitors will also have to take pictures of the location as proof that they were here.

Registration for the race must be done by Sept. 19. Teams may have two to four members and at least one team member must be 21 years old or older.

The race will begin at noon at Geronimo’s Tequila Bar and Southwestern Grill in New Haven.
During the race, participants will work together to solve clues, discover local sites, businesses and more – all while giving back to the community and having fun.

Only public transportation may be used, meaning participants may walk, take a bus, or ride the free trolley. Teams will be penalized for using private transportation like taxis, bicycles, unicycles, mopeds, scooters, segways, etc.

The team that correctly solves the most clues in the shortest amount of time wins a prize. The team with the best team costume also wins a prize!

Each participant will leave with a goodie bag of coupons and discounts from the sponsors.
No pets are allowed. Participants should bring a pen or pencil, smartphone or camera, smartphone adapter, and money for water, snacks, etc. Participants should also wear sneakers.

The beneficiary of the race is Public Allies of Connecticut, which is a New Haven AmeriCorps program that advances the new leadership to strengthen communities, nonprofits, and civic participation through a 10-month apprenticeship program. The members (Public Allies) are talented, emerging leaders from the communities that are served.

Look forward to seeing you on the 20th!

There's Nothing Better Than Wings and Beer

There’s no better combination than wings and beer.

Need some help pairing your wings with the right kinds of beer?

Wings Over New Haven can help you out.

When pairing beer with wings, it’s more about the sauce than the meat. Conventional wisdom in the beer world says that malty beers tone down the heat while hoppy beers enhance it.

This may not always be the case though.

Some feel that bitter brews wash the palate clean, brushing away the oils that set your mouth ablaze.

Buffalo wings have big, brash flavors that need an equally brazen beer to tackle them. American pale ales and IPAs will do the trick. Both have bracing bitterness and juicy, citrus, hop flavors that will complement and contrast the searing wing sauce.

An IPA will have a bit more sweet malt backbone that can counter the saltiness of the underlying chicken. IPA also goes great with blue cheese.

If you prefer your wings on the milder side, try a German or Bohemian Pilsner. A crisp, clean profile and dry finish keep it light and drinkable, so you won’t be weighed down. Snappy bitterness stops the heat and crisp hop flavors will work well with the side of celery.

Bohemian Pilsner has a stronger malt backbone to balance the hop bite. The German version is all about hops, more bitter, and with a drier finish.

You could also try an all-malt, craft-brewed American Lager. It’s like the macro stuff but with a bit more flavor and body.

You’re now officially ready for football season! So grab your beer and give us a call at 203-782-9464 or order online. And with our free delivery, you don't even have to drive to pick it up!

Choosing Wings Over New Haven

You love Wings Over New Haven, but where did Wings Over begin?

Wings Over was born and breaded at the University of Massachusetts in 1999 by Patrick Daly and Harold Tramazzo, who didn’t like the direction that restaurant food was headed. Most places that served the food they loved (wings, ribs, etc.) were just reheating food that was cooked in a factory somewhere.

They decided to do something about it.

Since building and finishing a dining room was extremely cost prohibitive, they decided to deliver their fresh, hand cooked wings and boneless wings to people and let them eat it at their own home. It turns out they learned two things:

  • People, especially college kids, loved the idea of having wings delivered to them.
  • Not too many places in the country were doing this yet.

Things began to grow pretty quickly with many success and some failures. Even though the company goal was to be the best and not necessarily the biggest wing delivery place in the country, there are almost 30 stores today and growing.

We love wings. We love eating like a caveman, pulling meat off a bone with our bare hands and teeth.

Usually we like to do it with a bunch of other people who act like cavemen. Add in some hot or sweet sauces and even the most polite fellow in the room starts to act like a Neanderthal.

That's why we do this. In this day and age of appletinis, hummus, lettuce wraps, and the like, every now and then you just need let your inner caveman out, and as far as we are concerned, there is no better food on the planet for your caveman to eat than a big, sloppy pile of buffalo wings.

We serve the best wings, boneless wings, ribs, sandwiches and fries for takeout and delivery. Our boneless wings (or chicken tenders if you like) are fresh hand breaded not frozen processed junk. Our wings are fresh, huge and juicy and we cook them in a manner which helps keep them as crispy as possible for delivery.

At Wings Over New Haven, we believe that takeout and delivery food should be of the same quality and have the same effort put into it as good restaurant food.

Wings Over New Haven Offering Free Delivery

Don’t feel like going out, but still want some great wings?

Have no fear, Wings Over New Haven has you covered!

We offer free delivery of all our awesome food and beverages – including our delicious milkshakes.

At our store, we have a delivery map on the computer and we use that to route the delivery drivers. It’s fully interactive and shows where we are and exactly how our drivers are going to get to where the food is going to.

We use it as a tool to make sure that the delivery drivers are getting to everybody on time and that they’re making the most efficient deliveries possible.

Once you call or order online, the food is cooked, and then goes in the delivery bag. Any sodas are also added to the bag. If you have ordered a milkshake, that goes in an insulated bag – to ensure that it is nice and thick, but still drinkable – and is then added to the larger bag.

Then our delivery driver leaves with your order, and it arrives at your door!

The way we look at our delivery drivers is like we’re waiting tables, but all the tables are all over the town of New Haven. We want to make sure that we get the food to you as fast and fresh as possible!

Fraternity/Sorority Wing Eating Contest to be Held in the Fall

In the fall, area students will be returning to school.

While this may be fun for some, Wings Over New Haven will be making it even more fun by holding a wing eating contest between the local fraternities and sororities.

There will be an entry fee to participate and the proceeds will go to a local charity of the winners’ choosing.

In addition to knowing that they helped out a good cause, the winning fraternity and sorority will also have bragging rights for the year.

The hope is that this will become an annual event, so the losing groups will have a chance to win back the bragging rights at the next challenge.

There will be a male and a female division – with fraternities and sororities from opposing schools competing against each other.

What better way to start the new school year?

Is all this talk of wings making you hungry? Give us a call at 203-782-9464 (WING) or order online.
